Every kilometre marker on the Alaska Highway counts down from a single point in this Peace River farming town. When Japan occupied two Aleutian islands soon after Pearl Harbor, the US government needed a land route to defend Alaska, and in March 1942 thousands of workers began cutting a road through nearly 2,400 kilometres of sub-Arctic wilderness. Dawson Creek, already the northern terminus of rail service in North America, became Mile 0, and the highway was finished in just eight months flat. The Mile 0 Post downtown still marks that exact spot.

Long before the highway arrived, Dawson Creek was a quiet grain-farming community that had grown up around homestead grants issued starting in 1912. The Northern Alberta Railway drove its golden spike here in December 1930, and when the depot went up two miles from the original settlement, residents simply hoisted their buildings onto log skids and moved the whole town to meet it. Grain elevators, a working railway park and a growing arts scene now sit alongside the highway history that put Dawson Creek on the map. Weed Market ships to Dawson Creek addresses the same way it does across the rest of British Columbia, fast, tracked and completely discreet.
