A banker who never set foot in the town got top billing over the man who actually built it. Surveyor A.S. Farwell staked the original 1885 townsite along the Columbia River and named it after himself, but when the Canadian Pacific Railway needed the settlement’s cooperation to complete its coast-to-coast line, the railway renamed it Revelstoke instead, honouring Lord Revelstoke, whose British banking firm had bought the CPR’s unsold bonds and rescued the company from bankruptcy. The last spike of that transcontinental railway was driven at nearby Craigellachie in November 1885, just as the boomtown was taking shape along Front and Douglas Streets.

Revelstoke wasn’t formally incorporated until 1899, delayed by a land dispute, but by 1910 it ranked among the three largest interior centres in the province thanks to its railway importance. Scandinavian immigrants brought competitive ski jumping here in the early 1900s, and local skier Nels Nelson set a world record with a 250-foot jump in 1925 on a hill that’s still hikeable today. Weed Market ships to Revelstoke addresses the same way it does across the rest of British Columbia, fast, tracked and completely discreet.
