Country music built Merritt’s modern identity, but cattle and coal built the town itself. Three ranches converged at the forks of the Nicola and Coldwater Rivers in the 1880s, owned by William Voght, Jesus Garcia and the Charters estate, and the resulting farming settlement was surveyed in 1893 under the name Forksdale, a name that never really caught on locally. In 1906 it was renamed Merritt, honouring mining engineer and railway promoter William Hamilton Merritt III, and coal mining took off the following year once the railway from Spences Bridge was finished. The town was incorporated as a city in 1911.

Merritt’s coal industry ran until the 1930s, when forestry took over as the economic backbone after the war. Decades later, the Merritt Mountain Music Festival drew as many as 148,000 people in its peak year, 2005, and the city still calls itself the Canadian Country Music Capital, with bronzed handprints of country stars lining its downtown Walk of Stars. Weed Market ships to Merritt addresses the same way it does across the rest of British Columbia, fast, tracked and completely discreet.
