Dawson City exploded into being almost overnight. When gold was discovered on nearby Bonanza Creek in August 1896, word spread slowly at first, but by 1898 tens of thousands of prospectors had poured in, briefly making Dawson the largest city west of Winnipeg and north of San Francisco. That gold rush left behind a downtown still built from the same false-fronted wooden buildings, along with stranger relics like the mummified human toe kept at the Downtown Hotel, the centrepiece of the Sourtoe Cocktail, a drink involving one grim ritual that’s inducted tens of thousands of willing participants into its club since the 1970s.

Diamond Tooth Gerties, opened in 1971 inside a former fraternal hall built in just three weeks in 1901, still runs Canada’s oldest casino and stages a daily vaudeville show honouring Gertie Lovejoy, a real gold rush dance hall star known for the diamond wedged between her front teeth. The Klondike Visitors Association reinvests the casino’s revenue straight back into preserving Dawson’s historic sites. The Dawson City International Short Film Festival draws filmmakers north each February, screening under the midnight sun’s opposite, near round-the-clock winter darkness. Today Dawson City is home to close to 1,600 residents. Weed Market ships to Dawson City addresses the same way it does anywhere else in Yukon, fast, tracked and completely discreet.
