A copper claim almost won out over a coal town’s founder when it came to naming this stretch of the Cowichan Valley. Long before Duncan existed, pioneer William Beaumont bet everything on nearby Maple Bay becoming the region’s commercial hub, running both a store and a hotel there to prove it. He guessed wrong. When the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway pushed through in the 1880s, it crossed farmland belonging to William Chalmers Duncan instead, and the crossing point, first called Alderlea, eventually just became known as Duncan’s. Copper mining ran here between 1897 and 1908, a detail most visitors miss entirely.

Merchants fed up with poor roads and thin services under the Municipality of North Cowichan petitioned to break away, and the City of Duncan was incorporated in 1912. Today it’s known as the City of Totems for its collection of First Nations carvings downtown, and it still serves as the commercial centre for a valley of roughly 80,000 people despite a population of only about 5,000 within city limits. Weed Market ships to Duncan addresses the same way it does across the rest of British Columbia, fast, tracked and completely discreet.
