Edmonton grew out of Fort Edmonton, a Hudson’s Bay Company post in place by 1795 and named by William Tomison after Edmonton in Middlesex, England, hometown of the Lake family, several of whom were influential in the company. The Cree name for the spot, amiskwacîwâskahikan, means “Beaver Hills House.” The fort moved more than once, and by 1813 it stood in what’s now Rossdale. Treaty 6, which covers present-day Edmonton, was signed in 1876, and the railway reached the area in 1891.

Edmonton became a town in 1892, a city in 1904 and the capital of Alberta when the province was created on September 1, 1905. It merged with Strathcona across the river in 1912, and the “Gateway to the North” nickname grew out of Blatchford Field, where pioneering aviators flew mail, food and medicine north. Today Edmonton is home to 1,010,899 people (2021 census), Canada’s fifth-largest city, about 290 km north of Calgary, with a river valley that’s the longest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America. Weed Market ships to Edmonton the same way it does across the rest of Alberta, fast, tracked and completely discreet.
