Martensville traces its start to 1939, when Isaac Martens and his son Dave bought farmland north of Saskatoon, and the growing community took the family’s name. By 1961 enough people lived on the Martens land to form a hamlet, and the Avenue “A” Service Station opened as its first business. Martensville became a village in 1966 with 784 residents, a town in 1969 with more than 1,000, and a city in 2009, with sewer and water service arriving in 1976. Today the city has four elementary schools and one high school. Home to 10,549 people (2021 census), up 9.3% in five years, Martensville lies about 12 km north of Saskatoon.
