Two prospectors chasing a lost horse found the fortune that built Nelson. In August 1886, brothers Osner and Winslow Hall were retrieving their pack animals near Toad Mountain after a disappointing gold search when they stumbled onto a copper-silver deposit, setting off a rush that founded what became known as the Queen City of the Kootenays. The government town site was first named Stanley, then briefly disputed with a rival name, Salisbury, before settling on Nelson in 1888, honouring BC’s Lieutenant-Governor Hugh Nelson. Under early mayor John “Truth” Houston, the city passed bylaws forcing stone and brick construction to replace the wooden buildings prone to fire, a decision that preserved the heritage architecture Nelson is known for today.

Nelson became the first city in BC to develop municipal hydroelectric power on the Kootenay River in 1907, and by 1914 it was a full divisional point for the Canadian Pacific Railway with its own customs office and Supreme Court. Architect Francis Rattenbury designed several of the granite civic buildings still standing downtown. Weed Market ships to Nelson addresses the same way it does across the rest of British Columbia, fast, tracked and completely discreet.
