Peterborough earned the nickname the Electric City for being one of the earliest adopters of hydroelectric power in Canada, a legacy tied to its location on the Otonabee River and its position at the gateway to the Kawartha Lakes. The Peterborough Lift Lock, a National Historic Site, still holds the title of the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world, raising boats on the Trent-Severn Waterway in a single lift that’s become one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Trent University sits along the same river on a campus known for its modernist architecture, bringing a steady student population into a city that’s otherwise built around manufacturing history and its role as a regional hub for the Kawarthas. Millennium Park, downtown along the riverbank, gives Peterborough a genuinely walkable green space right in the heart of the city.

Summer in Peterborough revolves heavily around the lakes just north of the city, with cottage traffic passing through on the way to Kawartha destinations and boaters using the lift lock as part of the Trent-Severn system connecting Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. The city’s downtown has held onto a lot of its older architecture, with a walkable core that mixes independent shops with the kind of civic buildings you’d expect from a city that’s been a regional centre for well over a century. Between the lift lock, the river running through downtown and the university crowd, Peterborough carries a character that’s distinctly tied to water, engineering history and its role as the front door to cottage country.
