Wainwright started life under a different name, Denwood, when homesteader James Dawson established the original townsite in 1905. A year later, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway built a new station four kilometres away and named it Wainwright, after William Wainwright, the railway’s second vice-president, and it’s this second site that grew into the town known today, incorporated in 1910. The area became closely tied to bison conservation soon after, with Buffalo National Park established just south of town in 1909 to protect the species from near-extinction. The park closed in 1940 and the land became CFB Wainwright, but bison never fully left the story: four animals from Elk Island were relocated here in 1980, and around a dozen still live in the Bud Cotton Buffalo Paddock at the base entrance today.

That legacy shows up everywhere in town, most visibly in a ten-foot fibreglass bison statue on Main Street, Canada’s largest, erected in 1965. Oil and gas discovered in 1922 still support the local economy alongside farming and the military base. Weed Market ships to Wainwright addresses the same way it does across the rest of Alberta, fast, tracked and completely discreet.
